The Spotsylvania County Middle School Debate League(SCMSDL) is located in historic and beautiful Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The league was founded in the summer of 2009 by Scott Miller, Lorraine Delgrosso, Greg Kurtz, Kristen Weidle and Lynn Hillyer. The creation of the league was inspired by the Great Debate Tournament two years prior in 2007 under the sponsorship of the local NAACP and direction of Mo Petway. Since the league's founding there have been four outstanding tournaments with an average of 110 students participating from all seven county middle schools. Topics of debate have ranged from school uniforms to the impact of fast food restaurants to parental responsibilities to standardized testing.
Each year the league sponsors two tournaments with the first in early December and the second in early February. The final end-of-the year grand championship tournament is the NAACP-Spotsylvania County School sponsored GREAT DEBATE Tournament. Students in all county and neighboring county middle schools, public and private, are encouraged to participate in the their school's debate program and then test their skills at our league's tournaments.
